        SAML. WOODWARD was one of the 18 headrights named in the patent of David Prichard for 900 acs. of land in New Kent Co,, bet. branches of Piankatank & Arakiaco, adj. Thomas Langford where he liveth, crossing Capt. Jeames meadow br., by a slash above the Path to Stringers; over the forte; to Thomas Hawkes, & adj. sd. Prichard & Charles Roames, &c.; 16 June 1671, p. 360 (Patent Book No. 6). [Nugent II, op. cit., p. 94]. 

        HENRY WOODWARD - Will, written July 17, 1671 and proven December 23, 1671, in Charleston, South Carolina. No wife or children named. Executor: Hon. John Youmans. Wit: Gyles Hall & Jun--io Dowden. [Source unknown]. {NOTE: Dr. Henry Woodward (born ca. 1646, England, died ca. 1689, South Carolina) married Mrs. Mary (Godfrey) Browne, daughter of Col. John & Mary Godfrey and widow of Robert Browne. He was the first English settler of South Carolina; came to this country, in 1666, as a surgeon; later, was made deputy of Lord Shaftsbury and was given 2,000 acres of land; and was made Indian agent for the government. It has been suggested that he may have belonged to the family of Thomas Woodward, first Surveyor-General of Albemarle (the Carolinas). He may, also, have belonged to the Woodward family of Norfolk Co., Virginia. He had three children:
     1. JOHN WOODWARD - born 19 Feb. 1681; married Elizabeth Stanyarne, 11 May 1702.
     2. RICHARD WOODWARD - born 9 June 1683; died 1725; married Sarah Stanyarne.
     3. ELIZABETH WOODWARD - married William Wilkins.

        MARY WOODWARD was one of 9 headrights named in the patent of Coll. Joseph Bridger for 432 acres in Surry Co., 18 July 1673. [Nugent II, op. cit., p. 129] & [Louise Pledge Foley. Early Virginia Families Along the James River - Their Deep Roots and Tangled Branches, Volume III: James City County-Surry County. p. 96].

        THOMAS WOODWARD, JUNR., 1600 acs., Is. of Wight Co., 5 Oct. 1673, p. 467 (Patent Book No. 6). At mouth of a br. of the Blackwater; adj. Mr. Newman; Hugh Latimore; Tho. Tookes; Anthony Mathews; Edm. Palmer; Jno. Portis & Henry West; a br. parting John Sherer & Jno. Clarke from Mr. Sweete; &c. 1200 acs. purchased from Mr. Sweete's patt., Wm. ooke's (or Tooke's)  & a parcell of Sherer's land; 400 acs. for trans of 8 pers: Paul Seise, Wm. Latten, Jno. Jackson, Jno. Richardson, Tho. Sannders (or Saunders), Tho. Waterton, Jno. Harris, Wm. Dunn. [Nugent II, Ibid., p. 130].

        CAPT. WM. BIRD, 1280 acs., on N. side of James Riv., 27 Oct. 1673, p. 486 (Patent Book No. 6). Beg. on the River about a mile above the falls, N. by E. to a slash named Woodards Labour, &c. Granted to COL. STEGG 25 Jan. 1663, deserted & granted to WM. WOODARD by order, &c., 10 Oct. 1670, who assigned to BIRD. Trans. of 26 pers: Ann Robyson, Eliz. Vauken, Tho. Mechell, Ann Bomly, Henry Capel, Eliz. Morten, Ja. Piggott, Robt. Martin, Rich. Archer, Abra. Law, Godfry Ragsdale, Walter Brokes, Bartho. Chandler, Tho. Boott, Ja. Hector, Joell Burgalle, Jno. Clengsen. [Ibid., p. 136].

        SAMLL. WOODWARD was one of 38 headrights claimed in the patent of Andre Davis, Jno. Webb, & John Langworthy for 1900 acs. in New Kent Co. 15 Dec. 1673. [Ibid., p. 144].

        FRA. WOODWARD was one of 60 headrights claimed in the patent of Wm. Phillips for 3000 acs. in New Kent Co. 18 Feb. 1673/4. [Ibid., p. 144].

        Major RICHARD LEE, 1140 acs., Gloster Co., knowne by the name of "Paradise"; 22 July 1674, p, 523 (Patent Book No. 6). Included three headrights: Tho. Mason, MARY WOODWARD, and William Butler. [Ibid., p. 152]. 

        Mr. THOMAS WOODWARD, SENR., 1300 acs., Is. of W. Co., on the Blackwater; 25 Sept. 1674, p. 527 (Patent Book No. 6). Adj. Capt. Antho. Fulgham; lands of Oldis & Ruffin; Col. Pitt "& his Partners," &c. Trans. of 26 pers: (All named). [Ibid., p. 153].

        GEORGE WOODWARD was second to sign a "Memorial of Grievances" (Petition) from James City County in 1676. [Rev. Dr. Edmund L. Woodward, Genealogist of the Woodward Society of Virginia].

        ENOCH WOODWARD - wit. sale of land, in Surry Co. James Barrett, son of Capt. William Barrett, of James City Co., & Maj. William White. [Davis, op. cit., p. 150]. 

        In 1677, GEORG WOODWARD, 2000 acs., James City Co., in Wimbleton (Wilmington) Par., & upon Tyascum (Diascund) Sw., p. 620 (Patent Book No. 6). (Date blank). Adj. William Elcones (?) land, &c. Sd. land granted to sd. WOODWARD by Sir John Ayton as by patt. dated 15 Oct. 1653, &c. [Nugent II, op. cit., p. 179].

        THOMAS WOODWARD, SR. - Will, written Oct. 5, 1677 and proven Oct. 9, 1677, Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. Leg. wife; son- THOMAS, JR., all land at Blackwater; land adjoining John Fulgham to daughter- KATHARINE; daughter- PHILLARITE, "the plantation where I now do live and all the Lands thereunto belonging"; the rest of estate to be equally divided among his children: KATHARINE, ELIZABETH, MARY, JOHN, & RACHEL; "and if my Sonn JOHN WOODWARD hath left any Children in England I do give them Two full pounds apiece." Wit: Antho. Fulgham, John Wingate. R. October 9, 1677. Page 153. [Chapman. op. cit., pp. 15-16] & [Copy of Will.         "On Dec. 1, 1677, Charles Roberts deposed that he heard thw Tomas Chamberlayne (who in 1678 and perhaps earlier was a justice of the county) threaten to disarm Mr. John Pygott because he had been one of Bacon's officers. On the same date Joseph Ekin deposed that Mr. Chamberlayne, about July last, desired his neighbors to come to his house and that the deponent saw Mr. Pygott give Mr. Chamberlayne two scabbards and two sword hilts; but he would not swear there were blades in the scabbards because he did not see them. About the same time JUDITH RANDOLPH testified that, at the house of JOHN STURDEVANT, she heard John Pygott swear and wish God damn men that would not pledge thr juice and quintessence of Bacon, and Mr. Chamberlayne said he could as soon pledge the Devil and left the room in a passion.         THOMAS WOODWARD - Inventory presented by KATHERINE the relict, daughter PHILARITA and son THOMAS WOODWARD.  R. August 9, 1678. Isle of Wight Co. [Will & Deed Book No. 2, p. 165] & [Chapman. op. cit., p. 17].

        Wm. Johnson, 21 Dec. 1678, paid PHILARITE WOODWARD for maintenance of his child. Wit: THOMAS WOODWARD, John Duffie. [Boddie. op. cit., p. 581].

        Henrico County Court Records, Deeds and Wills, 1677-1692: "Know all men by these presents that wee JOHN STURDIVANT & SARAH STURDIVANT ye wife of the said STURDIVANT of the County of Charles Citty out of the good will & affection we bear to SAMLL. WOODWARD the sonne of the aforesaid SARAH STURDIVANT, of the said County of Charles Citty, for the advancement & ______ of him. As also for diverse other good reasons & considerations we hereunto moveing doo hereby freely, clearly, firmely, & absolutely, for us our heirs execrs & admrs give, graunt, bargaine, sell, enfeoffe, & confirm unto the said SAMUELL WOODWARD his heirs, execrs, admrs, & assignes, forever all our whole right, title, claime, & interest in, & to one tract or dividend of land situate, lying & being at Turkey Island in Henrico County & was purchased of Mr. RICHD. COCKE & pattented by the relict of Mr. ROBT. HOLLAM & graunted to the heirs of the said HOLLAM, the whole dividend being one thousand acres (as by the pattent may appeare) And was given by will to the said SARAH & two other children of the said HOLLAM as by the will may appeare. To have & to hold the said land whether it be the whole tract aforesaid or part thereof that is due to us either by the said will or discent in law; with all houses, woods, waters, & other appurtenances belonging to the said land in possession and rights due to us as aforesaid, in as large & ample manner as in the said pattent &c. proof unto the said SAMLL. WOODWARD his heirs & assignes for Ever, without any trouble, loss, or molestation whatsoever, witness our hands & seales this 12th day of ffebruary 1679/80.

        Henrico County Records, Deeds and Wills, 1677-1692: "Know all men by these presents that I SAMLL. WOODWARD the sonne & heir of SARAH STURDIVANT the daughter of ROBT. HOLLAM & formerly the wife of SAMLL. WOODWARD of Charles Citty County in Virginia (deced) doo hereby make, constitute, & appointe Coll. EDWARD HILL of Charles Citty County aforesaid my friend & lawful atturny for me & in my name & to my use, to sue my land & recover it from any person or persons in Virginia all such lands, houses, and other appurtenances as doth or may appeare to belong to me, either as heir to my ffather SAMUELL WOODWARD (deced) or my mother SARAH STURDIVANT aforesaid & what my said Atturney shall lawfully doe in the primises, I doe ratifye & confirme as if personally by me. Witnesse my hand & seale this 18th day of ffebruary 1679:

        "Know all men by these presents that I SAMUELL WOODWARD as heir to my Mother SARAH STURDIVANT the daughter of Mr. ROBERT HOLLAM of Virginia, doe, for & in consideration that WILLIAM RANDOLPH hath purchased one hundred fifty acres of land, being part of the dividend of land which lyes at Turkey Island in Henrico County & due to me as heir, And by a gift from my aforesaid Mother SARAH STURDIVANT, and for diverse other good causes & consideracons me thereunto moving, for me, my heirs, execrs, and admrs, doe, & have hereby graunted, bargained, sold, enfeoffed, & confirmed unto the said WILLIAM RANDOLPH his heirs & assignes for Ever one hundred & fifty acres lyeing as is afore exprest & is bounded on the upper side by the line of Mr. RICHARD COCKE & on the lower side by peare trees & other marked trees, haveing it's length two miles in the woods, and apporconable breadth upon the river, being bounded as aforesaid, with all houses & other appurtenances to the said hundred & fifty acres of land belonging in any wise whatsoever, and doe hereby impower Mr. Richard Kennon & request him to acknowledge this presentt in Henrico County Court according to law, which acknowledgemet. I hereby ratifie & confirme, witness my hand & seale this 18th day of ffebruary 1679.

        FRANCIS WOODWARD - Will, written April 21, 1679 and proven August 15, 1679, Lower Norfolk Co., Virginia. Mentioned deceased wife; named sons- JOHN and HENRY WOODARD; daughters- MARY and ELIZABETH WOODARD; and mentioned land bought of Benony Burrough. Executors: Nicholas Wesley and Benjamin Granger; "and doe ordain them to take Care and Charge of my children until they Come of age, and to pay unto Joseph Lake the halfe of what amt here of two years and a half old may bee Expenses atby(?) and I doe appoint my daughter MARY WOODARD to bee kept by Joseph Lake and his wife untill she is Come to the age of sixteene or marryed."         THOMAS WOODWARD, JR.: Dying intestate, administration requested by KATHERINE WOODWARD in behalf of her son JOHN WOODWARD, next brother to the said THOMAS. Isle of Wight Co. Feb. 9, 1680. Security: Nicholas Fulgham, John Whitley. [Chapman. op. cit., p. 71].

        SAMUELL WOODWARD, 870 acs., upon Appamatuck River, 20 Apr. 1680, p. 24 (Patent Book No. 7). 600 acs. patented by CHR. WOODWARD, 24 Aug. 1637, & due sd. SAMLL., as his heir, which is renewed & included in this pattent; bounding N. upon the river, E. upon land lately belonging to WM. FARRAR, Gent., W. upon the Winding River; lying in Bristoll Par.. Chas. City Co., on S. side of sd. river; containing all the waste lands bet. sd. CHR. on the river & lands called Bayly's; on head of land of Mr. John Mayes on the S'wd., & lands in possession of Ja. Hall; to Henry Newcomb; near plantation called "Hoffords"; to Hofford's run; the King's Road, &c. Imp. of 6 pers: Robt. Stanly, Wm. Corbutt, Ellen Roach; 3 Negroes. [Nugent II, op. cit., p. 206].

        JOHN GILES, pursuant to a bond dated 24 Aug. 1680, with consent of PHILARITE, his wife (daughter of THOMAS WOODWARD, SR.), gives to JANE, daughter of said PHILARITE, a plantation at Blackwater where Ed Hayes lives - 400 acres - if she dsie land to return to JOHN GILES. Recorded 9 April 1681. Wit: Jno. Harris, Richard (X) Poole. [Boddie, op. cit., p. 21].
