RICHARD LEE (1613-1664) married Anne Constable. He died in 1664, while on a mission in London. He was appointed first Attorney-General of Virginia by Gov. Berkeley. After 15 years in Virginia, he still identified himself (in a petition) as an "English merchant trading in Virginia". He patented a comparatively large holding of 1,000 acres north of the York River, in the present county of Gloucester. Most of this land was acquired through the headrights on 17 indentured workers (50 acres per headright), but Lee did not import those headrights. A ship's captain named Florentine Paine traded in headrights on indentures (a complicated speculation skirting the border of illegality) and Richard Lee, who was continually associated with Paine, during his early years in Virginia, acquired the headrights' land in a deal with him.
