        WM. WOODWARS was one of the 12 headrights named in the patent of Christopher Regault for 600 acres in "Glouster" Co., 6 Mar. 1654. "p. 318 (Patent Book No. 3). Upon Ewd. side of a main swamp of Crany Cr., upon the head of Breemans Neck & adj. devdt. of Mr. Breeman, etc." [Nugent I, op. cit., p.302].

        Will of George Hardy, dated 16 March 1654 & proven 14 April 1655, Isle of Wight Co., Virginia. . . . Leg. Kinsman George Hardy, Jr. and Christian Willson to divide movable estate between them after the decease of my wife; my mill to said kinsman and his heirs, for lack of such heirs to Thomas Hardy and Christian Willson; seal ring to George Hardy, Jr.; the land I bought of Mr. John Stevens to Christian Willson; the land which I bought of Mr. Stamp to belong to the mill; I desire my wife to look after Thomas Hardy as my kinsman; I give one thousand pounds of tobacco towards the building of the church in this parish in case it be built of brick; to Christian Willson the land now in suit between me and the successors of Justinian Cooper.         WILLIAM COCKE was born, ca. May 1654, in Henrico Co., Virginia, son of RICHARD and MARY (ASTON) COCKE; died 1692/3. at Lowground, in Henrico Co., Virginia. He married (1st) JANE FLOWER, before 1680, and (2nd) Sarah Dennis. Issue:
1. MARY COCKE - born ca. 1682; married Obediah Smith.
2. ELIZABETH COCKE - born ca. 1685; married LANCELOT WOODWARD.
3. WILLIAM CO, JR. - born ca, 1690. 

        George Fawdon assigns to Mrs. Ann Smith "whom I intend to make my wife," 1500 acres of land in the Upper Parish upon the main river beginning at Job Beasleys adjoining the land that was formerly John Olivers and by land of Richard Corseys. 30 Oct. 1654. All which above mentioned jointure and dowry the nuptials now being celebrated. We the said George and Ann Fawdon do oblige ourselves never to alter without the consent of our father-in-law, Nathaniel Bacon and our mother Ann his wife with our brother William Smith."         Charles City County, Court Orders, 1658-1661: . . . p. 275. Abstract. Deed. 10 Aug. 1654. SAMUELL and SARA WOODWARD sell to Wm. Edwards, cooper, all their int. in a third part of 1000 acres "purchased of Mr. RICHARD COCKE and given unto the sd. SARA by will of her decd. father Mr. ROBT. HALLAM, vidzt., that part lying next to the land downwards wch. was purchased by the sd. Edds. of our brother John Gundrey." Signed SAMUELL "X" WOODWARD, SARAH WOODWARD. Wit: DANIELL LLEWELLIN, Margaret Llewellin. Ack. by DAN'L. LLEWELLIN for SAML. and SARAH WOODWARD 1 May 1665. Test: Hoel Pryse Cl. Cur. pre'dt. Wm.         Charles City County, Court Orders, 1658-1661: . . . p. 274. Abstract. Deed. 15 Aug. 1654. John Gundry of Elizab. City Co., gent, and Ann his wife sell Willm. Edwards, cooper, 333 acres in Henrico Co., adj. land of RICHARD COX (COCKE) and SAMUELL WOODWARD. Signed John Gundry, Ann Gundry. Wit: Edw. Hallywell, Tho: Sellery. Ack. in Court by Daniel Llewellin for John and Ann Gundry 1 May 1655. Wm. Edwards having already sold 100 acres part of above, "next adjoyning to Mr. COCKs land," To John Ewen, and 50 acres to Ewen, leased for life. The remaining acreage now transferred to Mr. John Beauchamp and Mr. James Crewes. Dated 3 June 1661. Signed Willm. "X" Edwards. Test Hoel Pryse Cl. Cur. Rec. 11 June 1661. *NOTE: In the two deeds above, ANN GUNDREY and SARAH WOODWARD were sisters, daughters of ROBERT HALLAM. . DANIEL LLEWELLIN married  ANNE (PRICE) HALLAM, widow of ROBERT HALLAM. The 1,000 acres tract of land mentioned was called "Turkey Island," and RICHARD COCKE, from whom this land was purchased, was the paternal grandfather of ELIZABETH COCKE, who married LANCELOT WOODWARD, ca. 1705. LANCELOT WOODWARD was alleged to have been a descendant of CHRISTOPHER WOODWARD (1594-1650). [Tyler, op. cit., p.300] & [24WMQ(1)128].

        THOMAS WOODWARD
was clerk of the assembly in March 1655. [Tyler, op. cit., p. 299]. He was clerk of Isle of Wight County from 1652 to 1658. [Boddie, op. cit., pp. 127 & 702].

        JOHN WOODWARD, 500 acs. Glouster Co., 17 May 1655, p. 337 (Patent Book No. 3). Bounded on N. & N. E. side with Pyanketank Riv. & S. E. upon Abraham Moon. Trans. of 10 pers: . . . (All named). Relinquished the rights to make good a patent for Col. Lee's children, viz: Wm. and Hancock Lee. Test: Tho. Brereton, Clk. [Nugent I, op. cit., p. 306].

        GEORGE WOODWARD signed and sworn in court, Surry County, 15 January 1656, "William Hukins his acct. Five months diett for his wife. Charge of buriall and a sheete." [Davis. Surry County Records, p. 25.

        William & Hancock Lee, sonns of Col. Richd. Lee, 850 acs. Gloster Co., 2 June 1656, p. 30 (47), (Patent Book No. 4). Upon a branch of Peanketanke Sw. 500 acs. due by rights of a patent to JOHN WOODWARD, Atty. of Col. Lee, 17 May 1655, & relinquished by sd. Lee to make this good & 350 acs. for trans. of 7 pers: (All named). Note: Deserted by said Wm. & Hancock Lee & regranted to Thomas Brereton, 28 Mar. 1662. [Nugent I, op. cit., p. 330].

        Charles City County, Court Orders, 1655-1658: p. 133. "Ordered that CHRISTOPHER WOODWARD be allowed and paid his share of the crop made at Capt. Llewellins planta'con according to his coven't." 9 Feb. 1657. [Fleet III, op. cit., p. 195.

        WM. WOODWARD was one of 40 headrights named in the patent of Col. George Read for 2,000 acres in Westmoreland County, Virginia, 3 Mar. 1657. [Nugent I, op. cit., pp. 389-390].

        Gilbert Medcalfe, Merchant, 500 acs. Gloster Co., 15 Mar. 1657, p. 179 (266), (Patent Book No. 4). Bounded on N. & N. E. with Peanketanke Riv. & a great marsh, E. upon land of Abraham Moone & N. W. upon a swamp opposite sd. marsh. Granted unto JOHN WOODWARD, decd., 17 May 1655 & by JOSEPH WOODWARD, brother & heir, assigned to sd. Medcalfe. Trans. of 10 pers." Deserted & renewed in name of Major David Cant, 25 Mar. 1664 for trans. of 10 pers: 9 Negroes & Mary Vaughan. [Ibid., p. 366].

        Charles City County, Court Orders, 1655-1658: . . .p. 103. April 20th 1657. "Recd. of Daniell Lewellin the day and years above written full satisfaccon (by ord'r and appointmt. of my father in Law and my mother Mr. Wm. Mason and Margaret, for one bill of eight thousand seaven hundred and fiftie pounds of tobbo. and cask made to my sd. mother wch. is in full of all accts. and reckonings betweene the sd. Llewellin and my sd. ffather and mother and my selfe from the beginning of the world to the present day. Witness my hand and seale the day and yeare abovewritten (Signature faded out). Signed and Delivered in the presence of CHRISTOPHER WOODWARD, Willm. Porter. This is the true copie of that discharge w'ch. I have given to my uncle Llewellin as witness my hand, Thos. allam. Rec. New Kent Co., on branches of Arraciaco Sw., 22 May 1657, p. 96, (142), (Patent Book No. 4). 300 acs. by patent dated 27 Oct. 1653; 350 acs. for trans. of 7 pers: MARY WOODERD (?), Jno. Lee, Jno. Martin, Jno. Hooke, Rich. White, John Hogg, Tho. Maple. [Nugent I, op. cit., p. 346].

        Charles City County, CourtOrders, 1658-1661: p. 172. "Att a Co'rt holden at merchts Hope ffebr: 3 1658, . . .:"
 "A Comicon of admt'acon of the estate of SAM'LL WOODWARD dec'd is graunted to SARA WOODWARD the relict of the sd. decedt, she giveing caution as is accustomed. [Fleet III, op. cit., p. 212].

        THOMAS WOODWARD, 100 acs. Low. parish of Isle of Wight Co., 24 Sept. 1659, p. 276, (377), (Patent Book No. 4). Adj. to E.S.E. parts of land of Thomas Jones & lately purchased by sd. WOODWARD. Bounded with lands patented by Capt. John Upton, Capt. John Moone & sd. Jones. Trans. of 2 pers: Jane Price, Mary Grimes. [Ibid., p. 391].

        Charles City County, Court Orders, 1658-1661: . . . p. 240. "Att a Co'rt holden att mchts hope Sept: 14: 1660. . " Abstract. "Quietus est to JNO STIRDEVANT of est of SAMUEL WOODWARD decd, he having given bond for overplus for use of the orphans, and releasing him from admr obtained by his wife in her widowhood." [Fleet III, op. cit., p. 233]. {NOTE: This record shows that SARAH (HALLAM) WOODWARD, widow of SAMUEL WOODWARD, married (2nd) JOHN STURDIVANT. The term "orphans" indicates that there must have been more than one child born to SAMUEL and SARAH (HALLAM) WOODWARD.}.

p. 265. Abstrract. Deed. 22 April 1661. "WALTER ASTON of Cha. Citty Com, gent, sells Wm. Edwards a parcel of land adj. land of sd. William Edwards, Jo. Hardway, Kemidges Creeke, Walter Shipleye. Signed WALTER ASTON. Wit: Tho. Crane, CHRIS: WOODARD, Wm. Alford. Rec. 23 April 1661. [Ibid., p. 240].

        Petition of JOHN WOODWARD, son of THOMAS WOODWARD, to the King, in Nov. 1661. To be put into possession of the house and office of Assay Master of the Mint, held by his father till the late troubles, when John Bradshaw, so-called President of the Council of State, on October 23, 1649, dismissed him for refusing obedience to the unusurped powers and put in Samuel Bartlett. On this, his father went to Virginia, publicly declaring that he would not see England again until his Majesty's return, is forwith sending him the joyful news and wishes to keep the office for him till his return or, if he be dead, to have a grant of it for himself.         THOMAS WOODWARD, aged 61 years, 10 Nov. 1661, signed a deposition, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Another record gives his age as 61 years old on December 9, 1665. [18V426] & [Boddie. op. cit., p. 540].

        THOMAS WOODWARD, of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, was constituted sole Surveyor-General of the Carolinas in 1662. [41V76-77]; [18V297]; 9WMQ(1)110-111]; & [Tyler. op. cit., p. 299].

        THOMAS WOODWARD, 100 acs. in Low. Parish of Is. of Wight Co., 28 Feb. 1662, p. 78, (551), (Patent Book No. 4). Adj. land now in occupation of Tho. Jones & lately purchased by sd. WOODWARD of sd. Jones, bounded with patented lands of Capt. John Upton, Capt. Jno. Moone & sd. Jones. (24 Sept. 1659). [Nugent I, op. cit., p. 420].

        Francis Morrison granted to John Askew, in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 200 acres, heretofore patented by HENRY WOODWARD, who died without heirs, 5 April 1662. [Boddie. op. cit., p. 554].

        Charles City County, Court Orders, 1661-1664: . . . p. 359. "Bee it known to all whom this may concern that I, Manwairing Ham'ond, of Riccohocke, Esq., out of the confidence and trust I repose in my trusty and well-beloved friends- the Hono'ble Francis Morrison, Esq'r., Mr. Theodorick Bland, Capt. Thomas Stegge, Major Joseph Croshaw, and Mr. Stephen Hamelyn, doe appoint and constitute the same persons, my true and lawful attornies, ov'rsee all the estate, reall and personall, I leave behind me in Virginia and they, or any thereof them, to have hereby power to lett or make sayle of . . . this 2d day of June 1662. [Fleet III, op. cit., p. 265]. {NOTE: John Flowers was the maternal uncle of Elizabeth Cocke, who married Lancelot Woodward ca. 1705. Rise Hoe may have been Rice Howe, who was listed as a partner in Christopher Woodward's Muster in 1623/4.}.

On a/c of conflicting dates with the Gen'l Assembly in Dec the next Court to be held at Westover the 5th Jan. 1662/3. [Ibid., p. 267]. p. 358. Abstract. Dif. betw Tho Marston plt and John Griffith deft. Among those chosen as jurymen were Rice Hoe and Mr. CHR. WOODWARD. [Ibid., p. 270].

        Capt. THOMAS STEGG, Gent., 800 acres, Henrico Co., N. side of James River below the falls, beginning at Chippiake Creek, running down the river &c. 29 Dec. 1662. Granted to Mr. FRANCIS HAMMOND, 28 March 1660, and by GENERAL MAINWARING HAMMOND, Admr., and brother of said FRANCIS wholly assigned over to said STEGGE.
